John W. Barton Sr., a local philanthropist and civic leader who helped found the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, died Saturday night at his home in Wilson in East Feliciana Parish.

He was 95.

Barton helped create the Baton Rouge Area Foundation in 1964, which helps local philanthropists connect with nonprofit organizations as well as invests in community projects, according to the foundation’s website.

Barton served as the foundation’s founding board chairman for decades. He left for a short time before returning as board chairman for two years in the 1990s, said John Davies, the foundation’s current president and CEO.

Barton also served on the board of directors of the Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation, according to his daughter, Annette Barton.

She said her father also helped raise funds for the construction of Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
