UPDATED: LSU Board Calls Special Meeting on Hospital Cuts

EDITOR’S NOTE: starting time for the meeting has changed to 9:00 a.m.

The start time for next Thursday’s planned special meeting of the LSU Board of Supervisors has been changed to avoid a conflict with a hearing by the Louisiana House Committee on Health and Welfare that has been called discuss possible budget cuts to LSU Health hospitals and clinics.

LSU Board Chairman Hank Danos, acting on a request from House Speaker Chuck Kleckley, moved the starting time for the board meeting to 9 a.m. from 1 p.m., as originally announced.

Several LSU System officials have been invited to testify at the legislative hearing, which is now scheduled for Thursday afternoon at the Capitol.

The LSU Board of Supervisors has called a special meeting for next Thursday in Baton Rouge to consider proposals for a new round of budget cuts to LSU hospitals.

A copy of the tentative agenda for the meeting is attached.  Background materials on specific reductions and changes to LSU Health are expected to be available online early next week on the Board Meeting Agenda page here.

A federal drop in Medicaid funding is prompting a new round of budget reductions that could range as high as 34.5 percent for each of LSU’s 10 public hospitals.

LSU Executive Vice President for Health Care and Medical Education Redesign, Frank Opelka, MD, says he hopes to present new plans to the Board of Supervisors when the special meeting convenes at 1 p.m. 9 a.m. on Thursday (10/4) in the Board Meeting Room of the LSU System Building, 3810 West Lakeshore Drive, Baton Rouge.
