LSU System Employees to Receive Pay Adjustments for First Time in Four Years
LSU President and Chancellor F. King Alexander announced Friday, July 26, that LSU System employees across the state will receive a pay adjustment for the first time in four years.
“This is a long overdue action that has been precluded by financial circumstances,” Alexander said. “While we still have considerable financial challenges, our first priority must be faculty and staff this year.”
The pay raises or supplements will range up to 4 percent, and will vary by and within institution and personnel types. The effective dates will also vary within institution depending on each institution’s current financial obligations and circumstances.
The funds for the adjustments will come from internal administrative savings and savings from personnel adjustments that have occurred over the last several years. In some cases additional funds will come from anticipated enrollment increases as well. The $10 million appropriated by the Legislature to the LSU System will support the entities in this important endeavor while also assisting institutions with some deferred maintenance projects.
Last year, the LSU System enrolled nearly 44,000 students with the flagship institution recruiting the largest freshman class in its history and expecting to have a similarly sized class this coming fall semester. Student achievement also has improved over the past several years. More students and higher productivity contribute to larger enrollment and increased service to the state of Louisiana.
“LSU is meeting the state’s need for adding to the workforce pipeline, and our next step is to begin filling faculty positions to accommodate this larger enrollment,” said LSU Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost Stuart Bell.
In 2012, LSU’s 66.7 percent six-year graduation rate, which represents its highest graduation rate in history, exceeded the current published average of its Southern Regional Education Board, or SREB, peers.
Across the LSU System, campus officials have expressed the need to reward employees and maintain competitive salaries.
“The last raise our faculty and staff received was in 2008,” said William “Bill” Richardson, chancellor of the LSU AgCenter. “So, we appreciate the opportunity to give the deserved compensation to AgCenter employees for their hard work and dedication.”
“It was absolutely necessary that we do something for the faculty and staff that have worked so hard over the past four years,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Hank Danos. “I am thrilled that we have found a way to reward their effort.”
