Description: Planning is integral to academic institutions of all sizes and types and includes how to respond to disasters. But, planning the response to a disaster of such magnitude that all campuses within a university system are adversely affected was unimaginable, until Fall 2005. Every institution of the LSU System was impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Panelists described how the LSU System assisted all of its campuses to resume operations within days of the storms, shared results of a System-wide assessment of the 2005 hurricane response, discussed preparations made for the 2006 season, and reviewed lessons learned.
|
Target audience: The target audience for this presentation includes system, university, college, and
departmental administrators as well as faculty members. These individuals could be from any type or
level of institution, both private and public, and of varying sizes. |

| CONCURRENT SESSIONS IV: CS-96; Track 3: The Role of Faculty in Student Learning |
| Location: Osceola 5, Convention Center, Ballroom Level |
Description: Faculty development funds are often limited, and disasters, like hurricanes, can eliminate them completely. Loss of travel funds, post-hurricanes, at many Louisiana universities posed a dilemma for organizers of LSU’s popular faculty development conference, Teaching in Higher Education (T.H.E.) Forum, which had been offered since 1998 in a traditional 2-day, on-site format. Organizers described how they met the challenge by using technology to transform T.H.E. Forum into a 1-day, multi-site, real-time electronic faculty development conference all on the Access Grid®, a first for the Grid® in Louisiana . The LSU System was a co-sponsor of the event. Conference outcomes, participants’ assessments, and lessons learned were shared in the presentation made at the 2006 SACSCOC Annual Meeting.
